Three Peaks Challenge
By Lindsay Lountain-Pick
After months of training and preparation, 18 people set out in August 2008 to undertake arguably one of the toughest challenges in the UK – the Three Peaks Challenge.
The two teams battled against the clock and severe weather conditions to complete the climbing and descent of the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis – 1,344m), England (Scafell Pike – 977m) and Wales (Snowdon – 1,085m) in just 24 hours.
With torrential rain and poor visibility forcing a separate three-peaks group to call out Mountain Rescue on Scafell Pike, the teams did extremely well to make it up and back without a hitch! Determination and spirits were pushed to the limit, but both teams came through in winning style and with smiles on their faces.
What they achieved
The two expeditions, which have raised in excess of £7,000 for The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign, were organized by David Gallimore and Lindsay Lountain-Pick, whose mum Celia has been receiving treatment at The Royal Marsden since 2006. It is hoped that the money will go some way to enabling the Marsden to continue its incredible work.
