Facing the future

Many cancer survivors find that after the relief of being told they are cancer-free comes a great feeling of uncertainty. It is only natural to worry about the cancer returning or the long-term effects of treatment.

These fears and worries can become oppressive and stop you from living your life to the full. Sometimes it is just a matter of time – as time passes your worries about becoming ill again fade.

If you are finding these thoughts are getting you down, there are sources of support and information.

The following strategies might also help:

  • Do things to distract you to minimise the worries
  • Get familiar with your body so that you feel able to know whether a symptom is trivial or something that needs checking
  • If a symptom doesn’t go away or gets worse, don’t be afraid speak to you doctor
  • Gradually pick up your previous lifestyle and activities - returning to normal routines is a great way to feel a sense of progress
  • Share your worries – it eases the burden.

If you can’t share worries with those close to you, a professional counsellor might help. You could also try making contact with a patient network group through one of the many available via cancer charities and voluntary organisations.
