Lung Unit

The Lung Unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital comprises a team of clinical staff (medicine, radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging). They work in close collaboration with chest physicians, thoracic surgeons and clinical nurse specialists in lung cancer and palliative care in nearby district general hospitals from whom we receive most of our referrals. The policy of the unit is to provide state-of-the-art treatment for all forms and stages of lung cancer and mesothelioma within the framework of a comprehensive clinical research programme and to provide leadership in national and international lung cancer trials.

The unit is based at both the Surrey and London sites of The Royal Marsden Hospital and sees over 500 new patients each year.  Patients are reviewed and treated within multidisciplinary clinical teams and treatment is based on common clinical guidelines and protocols.

Over the last few years we have broadened our research interests: we continue to place a high priority on drug development and new treatment strategies and are actively involved in national multi-centre trials to evaluate  therapies currently available particularly in patients with early stage disease.  We are also looking at patterns of referral, the patient pathway and the place of PET scanning.  We have an active research programme in IMRT radiotherapy and associated support in radiotherapy and the ongoing genetic work takes place on at the Royal Marsden.
