ECG
Electro Cardio Graph - a machine that traces the pattern of the heart's electrical activity onto paper. Can be used to see if the heart muscle is working properly and to see the heart rhythmn.
endocrine
Producing chemical messengers or hormones that are transported in the body by the bloodstream and have an effect on other cells or organs.
endoscopic intubation
Procedure that is done to place a tube into a body area using an endoscope (a flexible wand with a camera) whilst the patient is sedated. For example if a cancer is blocking the oesophagus, a tube can be inserted to hold the oesophagus open and allow food to pass through.
epidural
Injection into the lower spine to give pain relief.
epithelial
Membrane like tissue that covers the tissues and lines the gut. Epithelial tissue encloses and protects parts of the body (for example skin). Epithelial tissues also secrete substances (for example the lining of the stomach secreting acid) and absorb substances into the body (for example oxygen in the lungs).
