A presentation about pioneering research into drug resistance in cancer helped launch this year’s Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research Annual Research Report.
The report is a joint publication from both organisations highlighting important achievements and progress in cancer research and includes in-depth reviews of exciting developments in selected areas of research.
Together, The Royal Marsden and The Institute form Europe’s largest comprehensive cancer centre, with an outstanding national and international reputation and a special event was held to showcase some of the pioneering research from the past year.
The event was held at The Royal Marsden’s Education and Conference Centre in Chelsea where guests were treated to three presentations on groundbreaking research and developments.
Professor Alan Ashworth gave a presentation entitled Drug Resistance in Cancer – Revisiting Darwin.
He is Professor of Molecular Biology and Director of the Breakthrough Tony Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre at the Institute and he spoke about the recent work from his lab which is looking at new ways to prevent cancer cells developing resistance to drug treatments.
The next presentation was by Dr Stephen Johnston, Director of the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre at The Royal Marsden and Institute.
He talked about the Biomedical Research Centre one year on from the successful joint bid for funding for it and how it will help shape translational cancer research in the future – in other words from ‘bench to bedside’.
The final presentation was by Professor Andrew Pearson, Head of The Royal Marsden’s Children and Young People’s Unit and Chairman of the Section of Paediatric Oncology at the Institute.
He spoke about the focus of improving the outcome of children and young people with cancer including those with neuroblastoma – a tumour of the sympathetic nervous system.
