There were plenty of academic gowns and caps proudly worn at the Annual Award Ceremony for graduating students of The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation.
The beautiful St. Luke’s Church in Sydney Street, Chelsea was the setting for the lively and colourful ceremony.
Cally Palmer, Chief Executive, welcomed students, staff and guests to the ceremony.
Chief Nurse Shelley Dolan then spoke about the celebration of the achievements of the award winners and introduced of the guest of honour, Candy Cooley, Manager of the National Genetics Education and Development Centre.
Mrs Cooley has been a supporter of the School since its inception and she was a popular choice of guest of honour.
Mrs Cooley addressed guests and nurses following the presentation of the awards and to finish the ceremony.
Record numbers of students graduated from programmes during the year which included Diplomas in Cancer Care and Postgraduate Diplomas in Cancer Care for Allied Health Professionals.
Sara Lister, Assistant Chief Nurse/Head of School, said: “Our students make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients on a daily basis.
“We are constantly inspired by the commitment of our students; many of whom travel considerable distances to pursue their education with us. This evening is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and commitment of these students.”
The ceremony was also an opportunity to thank the wide range of people who had been involved in the development of the School’s exciting new cancer education programmes, which commence in September 2008.
This includes the brand new Gynaecological Cancer Care Practice module and a new Postgraduate Certificate in Cancer Practice for nurses and allied health professionals.
Following the ceremony there was a drinks and canapés reception at The Royal Marsden Education and Conference Centre.
