Royal Marsden patients have rated the hospital as one of the best in the NHS for levels of cleanliness and the dignity and respect they were shown while they were inpatients.

The standards of food and the care they received were also scored highly in the Care Quality Commission 2009 Inpatient Survey.

The survey revealed that the Trust scored in the top 20% of the NHS for levels of privacy given to patients while being examined with a mark of 95 out of 100. Overall the Trust was rated highly for dignity and respect given to patients with a score of 93 out of 100.

Patients also marked the Trust 92 out of 100 for the confidence and trust they had in the doctors treating them, putting The Royal Marsden in the top 20% of hospitals nationally.

Shelley Dolan, Chief Nurse, said she was delighted with the results of the survey. She added: “Patients have the right to expect to be treated with dignity and respect while they are at the hospital, and at The Royal Marsden we pride ourselves on ensuring this is always the case. To have our patients confirm that is reassuring, and is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff.”

The survey highlighted that The Royal Marsden was rated by patients in the top 20% of Trusts for the quality and choice of hospital food available and the cleanliness of wards and rooms were scored at a high 92 out of 100 by inpatients.

Infection control

Good infection control procedures were noted by patients in the survey. When asked if they had seen any posters or leaflets on the ward asking patients and visitors to wash their hands or use hand-wash gels, the Trust scored 99 out of 100.

Patients scored the Trust in the top 20% in the country with 92 out of 100 for doctors washing or cleaning their hands between touching patients and 93 out of 100, again in the top 20% of Trusts nationally, for nursing staff.

National survey

The Inpatient Survey is carried out annually and is now in its seventh year. It involved 165 acute and specialist NHS trusts across the country and in total 69,000 patients from England responded to questions asked about their experiences during their stay in hospital, with a response rate of 52%.
