Our amazing year

The Royal Marsden is one of the leading cancer centres in the world. Every day we strive to achieve more for our patients.

As a result of our commitment to excellence, we have had an amazing year. Here are some of the things we have achieved over the last 12 months:

One of the top Trusts in England

In the latest NHS performances ranking published by the Healthcare Commission, The Royal Marsden was the only Trust to be awarded the rating of 'double excellent' for two years in a row.

The Trust received the highest possible grading for how well it manages its finances (use of resources) and the quality of the services it provides (quality of services).

A new Biomedical Research Centre

The Royal Marsden and our academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research, has been awarded one of 11 National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre grants. We are the only institution to be designated a National Biomedical Research Centre for Cancer.

The grant provides £10 million of funding for cancer research each year for five years and £6 million for building a new Biomedical Research Centre.

Tamoxifen trial

Results from a 20-year trial at The Royal Marsden show that the oestrogen-blocking drug Tamoxifen reduces the risk of women developing ER-positive breast cancer by 39%. This finding emerged in the second decade of the cancer prevention study, which is deemed to be one of the most important studies to be carried out in the last 20 years.

da Vinci S – the new guy on the team

We are the proud owners of a da Vinci S robot. To find out more about the newest member of the surgical team and the benefits he brings to patients, click here.

One of the newest and largest radiotherapy units in the UK

The new radiotherapy suite in Sutton is now open. Representing an investment of £25 million, the new treatment facility provides the latest radiotherapy technology including intensity modulated and image guide radiotherapy.

GP Seminars - sharing our knowledge

As a teaching hospital, The Royal Marsden is committed to passing on its knowledge and sharing the latest developments in cancer care. As part of this commitment, we have run two successful seminars for GPs on the latest advances in the treatment of breast cancer and urological cancers.
